John Trippel
John J. Trippel was born in Maryland in 1950. He had a brief life in America until he moved to Kamahura, Japan in 1953. His father was stationed at Yokohama Navel Base while he grew up in the Japanese village of Kamahura until attending school. He moved back to America in 1959, living briefly in Hyattsville, then moved permanently to Alexandria, Va. in a little newly developed suburban community near Mt. Vernon. He attended catholic school right on through to college when he rebelled and decided upon attending an art school.
In 1975, he graduated in the certificate program at Penn. Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pa. He tried another year at Philadelphia College of the Arts but failed to complete any course work at that school, then moved down to central Virginia with some newly married friends. He was in bad shape and was hospitalized at U.Va., then after being released, moved into Charlottesville and he’s pretty much stayed here since then.
John attended PVCC in Jan of 1989 and graduated from Mary Baldwin College in May of 1992 with a Bachelors of Arts in fine art and education. Since then, he has been painting at home, plus working some at McGuffey print workshop under Judy Mc Cloud studio roof, and he’s been painting at different locations around Charlottesville doing his best to capture the scenes and buildings of this city.
His work is represented in the Pharmacy College at Temple University in Phila., the Penn Academy of the Fine Arts permanent collection, and in homes both in Philadelphia and Charlottesville. He also has a large body of work in the Blue Ridge Clubhouse and Region Ten’s Jim Peterson building on Preston Ave. He has shown at the Staunton/ Augusta Fine Arts Center in the park and at Mary Baldwin College.
